The Rules of Wealth: Part 12

1.      Don’t judge. If we make assumptions about people because of the money they have, it’s us who deserve to be harshly judged.

2.      Don’t envy it. While you’re busy envying wealthy people for their money, they’re busy envying other people.

3.      Other people’s money belongs to them. People are allowed to be irresponsible with their money if they want to.

4.      They can give it all away if they like. They can give it away, gamble it, burn it, spend it on sweets.

5.      Once they’ve gone, you can’t ask questions. There are lots of reasons why parents might love their children equally, but not split the money equally. The way people divide up their assets in their will has very little to do with the money itself.

6.      Blood comes before money. The real difficulty is what happens to your relationships with your brothers or sisters.

7.      Your children owe you nothing. Don’t you dare ask your children for money.

8.      Don’t make money taboo. You can help. But only if you know what’s going on.

9.      If they give it to you, it’s yours. If someone gives you money it not only becomes yours legally, but also morally, emotionally, psychologically.

The Rules of Wealth: Part 11

1.      Use your wealth wisely. Those who abuse their wealth don’t tend to stay wealthy for long.

2.       Never lend money to friends or family unless you are prepared to write it off. Chalk it up to experience and walk away whistling.

3.      Don’t lend, take equities. Asking for a convertible loan will sort the wheat from the chaff.

4.      You really, really can’t take it with you. Not getting rid of it is known as wealth bondage.

5.      Know when/how to say no- and yes. It’s your money and you can do with it what you want.

6.      Find ways to give people money without them feeling they are in your debt. If you can give them money without all that stuff being attached to it, you are doing well.

7.      Don’t over-protect your children from the valuable experience of poverty. A monthly allowance is always a good idea.

8.      Know how to use charities/good causes. Decide what is important to you.

9.      Spend your money because no one will splendid as wisely as you. I have noticed that the successful rich don’t hand over anything.

10.   Take responsibility before you take advice. Sometimes advice can come from unlikely sources and unlikely people.

11.   Once you’ve got it, don’t flaunt it. Don’t ever mention how much you’ve got, what you are worth or how much you earn.

12.   What’s next? Pacts with the devil? There is the old pact with the devil- but beware of gotcha clauses.

The Rules of Wealth: Part 10

1.      Shop for quality. Shopping for quality says masses about the way you live, the way you conduct yourself and your business.

2.      Check the small print. Small print can cost you dear. Check it carefully.

3.      Don’t spend it before you’ve got it. The future isn’t real until it becomes today.

4.      Put something aside for your old age- no, more than that. The earlier you do it, the less it will hurt.

5.      Put something aside for emergencies/ rainy days- the contingency fund. The shrewd rich ones keep a safety deposit box with cash for emergencies.

6.      You paid what for it? How to shop around. Just be a bit cautious and don’t go throwing money away needlessly.

7.      Never borrow money from friends or family (but you can allow them to invest). It is very bad manners to borrow from friends and family.

8.      Don’t surrender equity. Never give voting shares away to anyone.

9.      Know when to stop. There has to come a time when enough is enough.
