The Rules of Work: Part 7

1.      Dress one step ahead. You may choose the job you want. Now you can choose to dress like that job. Then you will get the job.

2.      Talk one step ahead. Be focused and dynamic, keep personal details to yourself- bosses don’t chatter or gossip about their social lives.

3.      Act one step ahead. Carrying out the rules requires strength of character, willpower, determination, honesty, courage, experience, great talent, dedication, drive, nerve and charisma.

4.      Think one step ahead. You will start to think like a boss and less like a worker.

5.      Address corporate issues and problems. If the company suggests a new procedure, immediately think how it affects your customers and not you.

6.      Make your company better for having you there. Can you see a way to do something cheaper, quicker or better?

7.      Talk of ‘we’ rather than ‘I’. if you go to meetings it is so much more grown up (and cool) to talk of ‘we’ instead of ‘I’.

8.      Walk the walk. You’ve got to become whoever and whatever it is you aspire to be.

9.      Spend more time with senior staff. You’ll be amazed how often bosses are grateful for a ‘worker’ talking to them.

10.   Get people to assume you have already made the step. Be serious, mature, grown up and adult.

11.   Prepare for the step after next. Once people get in the habit of assuning you are a high flier, you become one.

The Rules of Work: Part 6

ریچارد تمپلار این بخش از قاعده های کار را با این پیشنهاد آغاز کرده است: «با دیگران جفت و جور شو!»

1.      Know the corporate culture. You don’t have to buy into the corporate culture- you don’t have to believe in it- all you have to do is fit in.

2.      Speak the language. If they all use geeky language, then you too must use it.

3.      Dress up or down accordingly. Unfortunately, one of the things we British don’t do well is dress casual.

4.      Be adaptable in your dealings with different people. The perfect manager is the one with the ability to spin on a sixpence.

5.      Make your boss look good. This is the kind of loyalty that other managers will admire.

6.      Know where to hang out, and when. Get your face known; get your name known.

7.      Understand the social protocols. Of course, these social protocols may be obvious- the important thing is to identify them, file them away.

8.      Know the rules about the authority. Who runs your office? I bet it ain’t the boss.

9.      Know the rules about the office hierarchy. Office protocols and hierarchies are old fashioned, petty, small minded, outdated, and yet still very much with us.

10.   Never disapprove of others. The smart mover concentrates on their own path and ignores the route others choose to take.

11.   Understand the herd mentality. Think independent, selfish thoughts.

The Rules of Work: Part 5

در این بخش از قاعده های کار حرف اصلی این است: «مراقب خودت باش!»

1.      Know the ethics of your industry. Is your industry a good thing or a bad thing? Does it hurt or heal?

2.      Know the legalities of your industry. To be a rules player you have to be cleaner than clean.

3.      Set personal standards. We must endeavor to be the very, very best we can at all times.

4.      Never lie. You are allowed to talk up your qualities or skills or expertise- just don’t actually tell a lie.

5.      Never cover up foe anyone else. If you do decide to cover for others, it complicates your life so much that it can’t really be worth it.

6.      Keep records. If it is in writing, it makes your job so much simpler, so much easier.

7.      Know the difference between the truth and the whole truth. There may be ruthlessness going on around you, but you don’t have to participate.

8.      Cultivate your support or contacts or friends. Playing it straight is such an unusual thing that they will have no defense against it, no protection.

9.      Date with caution. Of course, you can’t be sure the relationship will last for ever, but if it doesn’t have a chance, steer clear.

10.   Understand others’ motives. Anybody whose motives are need and fear and greed should be treated carefully.

11.   Assume everyone else is playing by different rules. The rule book you now have must remain a secret. If you reveal your rules, you have broken the rules.

12.   Keep the faith. If no one is flying the flag for decency, that’s the last chance gone.

13.   Put things in perspective. You have to learn to switch off, relax, not take it so seriously, enjoy it more, put things into perspective.
